If you're new to hockey, welcome to one of the fastest, toughest, and most passionate sports on the planet. Hockey isn't just a game: it's a culture. One full of speed, grit, and the occasional tooth flying across the ice.
This guide breaks down the basics- What to know, who to watch, and why hockey deserves your time and love. All from the perspective of a girl who had a hockey-coach father and grew up in cold rinks.
The Basics
Teams - Two teams with six players on ice (five skaters and a goalie) battle it out on the ice.
Objective - Score by shooting the puck into an opponent's net. Most goals win.
Periods - 3 periods, 20 minutes each, with an intermission in between.
Overtime - If tied at the end of OT, a 3-on-3 sudden death or shootout begins. In playoff hockey, OT goes until someone scores.
The Ice and the lines
Understanding the rink makes understanding the game way easier:
Red line - Center ice. The game's Equator.
Blue lines - Create the offensive and defensive zones. Crossing these determines offside.
Goal lines - Where the magic happens- also where you're going to hear "Did it cross the line?!" debates.
Key rules in plain English
Offside - You can't enter the attacking zone before the puck does.
Icing - Dumping the puck from behind your red line all the way down without touching anyone? Icing. Play stops.
Penalties - Hooking, tripping, and slashing- if it sounds aggressive, it probably lands a player in the penalty box.
Why is hockey special (and why does it need more women covering it)
Hockey is one of the few sports where speed meets raw physicality and insane skill, as well as a puck traveling over 100mph in a shot.
But here's the catch. Hockey is still a male-dominated sport, in reporting, game ops, and more. That's why I'm here blogging about it. To bring a little sparkle and a splash of pink alongside my female perspective to a sport that has been gate-kept for way too long. We belong in the rink and the press box!
What makes hockey addictive
End-to-end action - No waiting around- it's constant, fast-paced, and moving.
The sound of the game, though biased, the skates cutting into the ice, the roar after a goal, its sounds are satisfying.
Overtime madness - Whether it's a shootout or playoff OT, Instant heart rate spike.
The Playoffs - The best time to be alive. Nothing in any sport compares to Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Beginner tips
Learn the flow - Follow the puck, but also learn how it's being played. This sport is full of strategy by the players and coaches.
Pick a team - You don't need to settle down on a team, but find one that interests you and watch their games. Whether it's your hometown or cool jerseys, pick one.
Expect hits- not fights - Don't get discouraged if there isn't a fight, it's not all there is to the sport. Go to wrestling if that's what you're here for.
Follow the stars, past and present - Learn about the top-ranking players, the young leaders, and even past hockey legends. It builds your knowledge and will help you learn more about stats.
Don't be shy - Ask questions! It can be intimidating, but asking someone else to help you understand the sport isn't weird! Google terms, deep dive into things! The hockey fanbase can be a lot of things, but they are PASSIONATE!
Final Whistle
Hockey isn't just a sport- it's a passionate fanbase with moments shared like a family. So get into it. You're part of it now. Get ready to fall in love with one of the most electric games on earth!
