The New York Islanders completed a dramatic comeback Tuesday night, erasing a three-goal deficit to defeat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in overtime. The comeback was sealed by Mathew Barzal, who scored the OT winner to finish off the game.
The victory was also notable for newly acquired Brayden Schenn (Schenn was traded on March 6th to NYI for F. Jonathan Drouin, a 2026 first round draft pick, a 2026 third round pick, and goalie prospect Marcus Gidolf), who recorded an assist on the game-winner in his game against his former team.
First Period: Blues Jump Out Early
St. Louis controlled the opening frame of the game by capitalizing on their early scoring chances. Defenseman Philip Broberg opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Jimmy Snuggerud and Robert Thomas to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.
The Islanders struggled to generate sustained pressure in the period, while St. Louis was able to limit New York's transition opportunities.
Second Period: Blues Extend Lead Before Isles Respond
The Blues doubled their lead in the second period when Dylan Holloway finished a play created by Cam Fowler and Snuggerud, pushing the score to 2-0.
Momentum stayed with St. Louis shortly afterward. Snuggerud then found the back of the net himself, his thirteenth goal of the season, a feed off of Thomas and Theo Lindstein, making the lead 3-0 and seemingly putting the game into the Blues' control.
But the Islanders finally broke through late in the period. Veteran center Jean-Gabriel Pageau cut the lead down to 3-1, as he finished a play from Barzal and Matthew Schaefer. The goal provided New York with the first spark of the night and set the tone for the third-period comeback.
Third Period: Islanders Special Teams Turn The Game
The Islanders leaned heavily on their power play to climb back into the contest.
Early in the third, Calum Ritchie scored an unassisted power play goal, cutting the lead down to just 3-2. The tally shifted the momentum decisively toward New York as the Islanders began to dominate puck possessions.
Later in the period, the Islanders' power play struck again. Bo Horvat buried his twenty-eight goal of the season of passes from Ritchie and Barzal to tie the game at 3-3.
From that point on, the Islanders controlled much of the play, testing Blues goalie Joel Hofer.
Overtime: Barzal Finishes The Comeback
Despite facing a barrage of shots through the game, Hofer forced overtime with a stunning performance, stopping 46 of the 49 shots in regulation.
But the extra frame belonged to New York.
Barzal ended the game with his eighteenth goal of the season, finishing a play set up by Schenn and Tony Deangelo to secure the 4-3 OT win.
Goaltending Breakdown
Ilya Sorokin had a mixed performance for the Islanders. He allowed three goals on 23 shots (.870 save percentage) but settled in after the Blues' early surge and stopped every shot he faced for the final period and overtime.
Hofer, meanwhile, was a star for the blues. His 46 saves on 49 shots (.939 save percentage) kept St. Louis in the game despite being outshot by the Islanders.
