The New Jersey Devils turned a tight game into a statement on March 18th, pulling away late to defeat the New York Rangers 6-3 in a momentum-heavy matchup that flipped multiple times before breaking open in the third.

First Period: Trading Blows Late
The opening frame was fast but scoreless for much of the period, with both teams generating chances and Jonathon Quick standing tall early for New York. The Rangers eventually broke through at 15:20, when Vladislav Gavrikov jumped into the play and snapped home the game's first goal.
New Jersey answered quickly. Just under a minute later, Nico Hischier finished a clean passing sequence from Connor Brown and Jesper Bratt to tie it 1-1.
The Devils weren't done. In the final minute of the period, Arseny Gritsyuk capitalized on a turnover and buried an unassisted goal to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead heading into intermission.
Second Period: Back-and-Forth Battle
The Rangers needed just 19 seconds to respond in the second, as Mika Zibanejad evened things up at 2-2 with a quick strike off the rush.
The period settled into a physical, tightly contested stretch, with both sides exchanging chances but struggling to finish. That changed when Connor Brown restored the Devils' lead by finishing a play set up Jack Hughes and Hischier to make it 3-2.
Despite the pressure from New York, including several quality looks, Jacob Markstrom held firm in the net for New Jersey, preserving the one-goal advantage heading into third.
Third Period: Devils Pull Away
The Devils took control for good early into third. At 6:29, Timo Meier extended the lead to 4-2, finishing off a strong play created by sustained offensive pressure.
The Rangers made it interesting when Conor Sheary cut the deficit to one at 4-3 midway through the period, but the momentum didn't last long.
Jack Hughes delivered the dagger at 13:05, restoring a two-goal cushion after ringing one off the post moments earlier. From there, the Devils fully took over.
Late insurance from Jesper Bratt capped the night, sealing a 6-3 victory and putting the game out of reach.
Takeaways
This game was close- until it wasn't. New Jersey showed resilience with multiple responses after conceding, but the real difference came in their ability to capitalize on mistakes and finish in the third period.
Strong playmaking from Hughes drove the offense, while Markstrom's steady presence allowed the Devils to weather New York's pushes.
For the Rangers, early goaltending kept them alive, but defensive lapses ultimately proved too costly against a Devils team that knows how to punish them.
