Flames Hold Off Late Devils Push in 5-4 Win

The Calgary Flames built an early lead and survived a frantic final push from the New Jersey Devils to secure a 5-4 victory.
First Period
Calgary opened the scoring in the first when John Beecher fired a wrist shot past Markstrom for his second goal of the season. The play was set up by Matvei Gridin, who picked up the lone assist.
The Flames doubled their lead shortly after when defensemen Olli Määttä blasted a slap shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season, giving Calgary a 2-0 advantage.
New Jersey responded late in the period. With 3:46 left on the clock, Maksim Tsyplakov scored his first goal as a Devil on a snap shot to cut the deficit to 2-1.
